Words to Wisdom on Atomic Habits

Remember the slogan "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" ads that used to play on every channel for the famous political party BJP? Those short films and documentaries about the importance of Development? The funda is simple: Five fingers by themselves will not be effective unless you close your fingers and make a fist. The same principle works for you when it comes to personal development.

Usually, I am aware of the book choices that Words to Wisdom picks, but this time it was much needed for me, and I say thank you from the bottom of my heart for picking this book. It felt like a soul-reading experience for me and other members too. Let me first dive deeper.

5 Aspects of Life

We all aspire to change ourselves in every aspect of life. By themselves, the five fingers of Life: Social, Emotional, Physical, Mental and Spiritual- have their functions. But, these aspects must act in unison for effective action. In other words, for long-lasting development, you need to master all five aspects. Everyday. There is no other way.

How to align these aspects of Life

To achieve The Five fingers of Life it is important to understand what is a habit, and how to create a good habit and break the bad ones which are divided into 4 simple steps: Cue, Craving, Response and Repeat.

1% better everyday means you caste vote for your growth in a positive way and 1% worse everyday is casting your vote in detrimental way.
Mathematics behind 1% change

Four Laws of Behaviour Change

Cue, Craving, Response and Repeat form a cycle known as the Habit Loop ie how the habit works and the framework is called the Four Laws of Behaviour Change.

How to Create a Habit:

The 1st Law: Cue: Make it obvious.

The 2nd Law: Craving: Make it attractive.

The 3rd Law: Response: Make it easy.

The 4th Law: Reward: Make it satisfying.

How to Break a Habit:

The 1st Law: Cue: Make it less obvious.

The 2nd Law: Craving: Make it unattractive.

The 3rd Law: Response: Make it hard.

The 4th Law: Reward: Make it unsatisfying.

I understood how one of my friends sticks to his habits, not only at home but also outside. Wherever he goes, he gives at least 15 minutes to himself before engaging with the outside world. He is not excited about seeing things until he has recharged through pranayama and meditation. He gives himself a 10-minute break every hour and simply closes his eyes to regain his senses.

If you say you wake up at 5 AM but in reality you wake at 7 AM so you are casting vote opposite of your identity.
Your identity emerges out of your habits.

Every member of the Words to Wisdom Book Club on Atomic Habits has some routine that they follow. Piyush has his routine for meditation, A K Singh has his morning rituals, and it’s the same with other members too.

However, I understand that not everyone can build a habit easily, and it is not that easy in our gadget-filled world, which provides enough distractions to keep us away from our goals. But honestly, this pick by the Words to Wisdom Book Club will help you build any habit and break any detrimental one. All you need is the right mindset. First, everything starts in the mind, and then planning begins, such as determining your cue to develop a certain habit.

For example, after waking up, I immediately drink lukewarm water, so it is a habit. "As I wake up, I will have lukewarm water." Now if I wake up at 5 AM, I will say, "I wake up at 5 AM, and the first thing I do is drink lukewarm water."

Personal Take

This book helps us in every way, in any aspect of life. Treat any habit you want to develop like a genie. Expect things from it—if you want to channel your life, shouldn't you expect better returns from it? And that’s what this book provides.

I feel that whatever we do, we should finish it. Take the same pride in running your life that a marathoner takes in crossing the finish line. Don't build or break any habit to beat, win, compete, or compare against others. Forget about others; it is your job to finish what you have started. That will be the victory.
